In our classroom we have been reading the story by: Bill Martin Jr. Brown Bear Brown Bear What do You See. It is a great repetitive text that teaches colors. For my students with their many multiple disabilities, I wanted to find a way to make the book more meaningful for them that also went along with their IEP Goals. Feeling textures within books as they are read. This helps my students not only bring the book alive for them but is also allows all my students to be part of the reading process. Part of my lesson planning was to search on the internet different animal art projects in Pinterest, online through an open search for each animal and from there I would determine what texture would best represent the animal allow for variety within the Brown Bear Brown Bear texture book.
This has been a big project in my room that will last for two weeks. The end product will be wonderful textured individual book for each student to take home and to share with their family. My hope is that they are used and enjoyed by all. Family and students, teachers and students, and typical peers and students. The goal is to get everyone read and enjoy the story while bringing the book to life to my special needs students and and meaning for everyone.
Below are the different textured animals that we have made to date. Each texture used is given with each animal. (I will be adding additional animals as we continue to make our book...White Dog, Black Sheep, Gold Fish)
Enjoy!! Ms. Davis
